Revitalize DIP: Community Landscape Plan
This landscape plan was developed for a community event space along Dauphin Island Parkway in the Gulfdale area of Mobile, AL. The design balances everyday curb appeal with the practical demands of an annual car show and outdoor expo, including designated tent areas and pedestrian pathways. Low-maintenance, native-forward evergreen species were prioritized to reduce upkeep on a space that sits unattended between events. Two palette options, a classic Gulf Coast evergreen scheme and a tropical alternative, give the community group flexibility to choose the direction that fits their vision.
The Helton Cottage Plan (Landscape)
This landscape plan supports a community house built around edible production, native plant education, and privacy screening. A 92% native plant palette reinforces the site’s educational mission at every layer, from ornamentals to shade trees. Six raised beds, organized by crop family, give the community hands-on space to grow food and learn about local ecology. An integrated chicken coop and bee hives extend the site’s role as a living classroom connecting people to food and the land.
The Stevens Plan
This project revised an existing landscape plan for a residential property on Dauphin Island, replacing species poorly suited to coastal conditions with better-adapted alternatives. Rather than starting over, the scope focused on targeted plant replacement that improved resilience while respecting the existing landscape structure. Salt-tolerant, wind-resistant natives were prioritized, along with a dedicated butterfly habitat for Gulf Coast pollinators like Monarchs. Pet-safe plant selections were also factored in, giving the client a landscape that’s beautiful, resilient, and easy to live with.
Huggins Plan
This planting scheme was designed to solve three problems at once: privacy screening, erosion control, and utility concealment. An evergreen-dominant palette anchors the design year-round, layered with seasonal bloom sequencing for added color and interest. The driveway bed stabilizes slope through massed evergreen plantings, while foundation beds conceal utilities and add low-maintenance coverage. The result is a landscape that stays functional and attractive across all four seasons with minimal upkeep.
The Tropics
This landscape planting plan was designed to complement a new residential accessory structure, giving the client a cohesive outdoor environment around the home gym addition. A dedicated plant legend combines structural evergreens like Podocarpus and Wheeler’s Dwarf Pittosporum with textural accents such as Muhly Grass, Needle Palm, and Pindo Palm. A separate potted plant view addresses container plantings near the structure, featuring Canna Lily, Bird of Paradise, and Firebush for seasonal color at grade level. The plan was fully coordinated with the site and shed design, ensuring plant placement respected setbacks, sightlines, and future maintenance access.
The Bay
This landscape plan was developed directly from the architectural site plan, establishing accurate scale and property boundaries before any planting decisions were made. Working from a precise base allowed the herb garden, foundation plantings, and pollinator-friendly groundcover to be positioned in direct relationship to the driveway, boardwalk, and building footprint. Plant selections such as Autumn Fern, Muhly Grass, and Itea Virginica were sized and spaced according to their mature growth habits rather than an idealized layout. This grounded, data-first approach ensures the design performs exactly as drawn once installed.
