I'm Matthew Richardson, the designer behind Nikolaevich Designs. I grew up around plants and building, and that early hands on time in the dirt and around construction is really where this all started for me. I went on to earn a formal degree in interior design, and I've spent the last several years building a practice here on the Gulf Coast, working out of Mobile, AL and serving clients across Baldwin County and the surrounding area. I've worked on everything from backyard landscapes to community non-profit projects to full construction document sets for accessory structures. What hasn't changed since those early days in the garden is the love of watching a space come together, from the first sketch to something a family or a community actually gets to live in.
Sustainable design is the starting point for everything I do, whether it's a landscape, a structure, or the space in between. I lean on LEED principles and thoughtful material and plant choices suited to our zone 8b/9a climate, so the work I design actually fits the environment instead of fighting it. That means less waste, less maintenance, and buildings and outdoor spaces that hold up to Gulf Coast heat, storms, and humidity over the long run. I also believe design doesn't stop at any one discipline. Site planning, structural decisions, and interior atmosphere all work together, so every project feels like one connected idea instead of a handful of separate choices bolted together.
Design should be fun. It should feel like an exciting part of building something you love, not a chore you have to get through. My goal is to make thoughtful, well built design accessible to everyone, not just high end clients. I want working with me to feel friendly and easy, whether you're a homeowner planning your first project or a community group trying to bring something good to a neighborhood that needs it.
